Week 2

Week 2:

Perspective 2: This week was about two point perspective. Pretty straight on. Learnt how to divide equal squares which is nothing new too.

Production sketching: Feng made us do some sketches of simple shapes which had to be constructed. It was an enormously challenging process to do up weird shapes but fun nonetheless.

Design: I presented my idea for the pitch this week. I think I hit it right. Main feedback I got was to articulate clear on my presentation when it came to showing new ideas. I need to produce concise drawings to explain how processes work to make my presentation more effective.

Digital Painting: I learnt a lot from Kingston! Had to paint cubes and spheres! WOW! IT was so much fun! I’ve also realised that I am trying to blend the colours too much from afar. I should zoom in more to touch up on details.

Weekly updates on my life at….

Hey Greightians,

I’m gonna use this platform to reflect on whatever I’ve learnt at FZD on a weekly basis to solidify the knowledge that I’ve picked up and to give a peek at what’s going on at FZD. I’m not going to go into detail as to what’s taught because that is not fair to those who paid 40K to attend FZD while I give a free insider’s look at the curriculum. I will only post what I’ve learnt from whatever that’s been given out. You guys can ask me personally when we catch up in gatherings and stuff (when I come out of the mountain jungle that is) Hopefully I can breathe life to this blog yet. It’s been way too long for any updates man. let’s inspire ourselves peeps! :)

Week 1:

Getting my basics right.

MONDAY: I’ve been learning about perspective on Day 1 after orientation into school. It’s like BAM! They push us right into the hotseat to learn our stuff. Tze Wei gave a lecture on one point perspective and I spent time practising my drawings again. I had the chance to nail down my perspective drawings full steam. It was harder than I thought it would be. Very time consuming and because I was flipping the objects (tables and chairs) beyond the one way of looking at it, it challenged me to think about my one point and I learnt more about one point perspective than ever.

Most important thing about one point perspective is to nail down the verticals. Once I have established the true verticals of the one point persepective, the rest was pretty easy. Never EVER EVER forget that the face of the object regardless of its orientation will ALWAYS ALWAYS have a true vertical. Find it and do not be confused with the lines going into perspective.

TUESDAY: Feng Zhu taught on Tuesday. He gave a brief outlines on the industry and lots of insider information. Our assignment was to draw 5 pages of straight line with a pen. I realised that by the time I hit like the 6th -7th hour of just straight ass drawing fucking lines, its soooooo damn easy to draw one with a pen. No questions asked. It also becomes easier to eyeball a point to another point and draw a straight line across. I realised also that I picked up some soft skills from Feng. He shares a lot of stories based on his experiences and he draws people attention to him. I think its very humble of him to acknowledge that he is not the best (although HE IS ONE OF THE BEST) and be honest about his progress as a designer. That is a leadership quality that I want to pick up from him.

WEDNESDAY: No new classes. Sketching assignment was given out for our sketchbooks.

THURSDAY: Tze Wei went through the design process. The whole design process shouldn’t be too new to you PD guys. PROBLEMS ==> INSPIRATION ==> DESIGNS. I found it refreshing to do up new designs and exciting but I too realised that my designs were very grounded and not over the top like some of my classmates. My ideas CAN WORK  if really put into production which was pretty exciting and fun. They were cool ideas too! Should’ve taken up a module or two in PD back in ADM. Very excited about this class. Hopefully my grounded-ness will not limit my imagination. :)))

FRIDAY: Digital Painting with Kingston. Kingston went how light behaves in objects. The most important thing was for me to discover where the core shadow was and be able to make educated guesses on where the light source is. Light ALWAYS travels in a straight line. And EVERY OBJECT is a LIGHT SOURCE. Bounce light is everywhere and it illuminates everything. That is something that I’ve tried to spend months decoding while doing digital painting and taking up classes at Concept Design Academy in L.A. It finally hit me and it was amazing to know and see my class mates understand it in ONE SINGLE DAY! Very amazing! Very cool.

STUART: Show your art to the world

The Saatchi Gallery would like to invite you to join STUART – the world’s largest free online Student Art gallery

Following the success of Saatchi Online – our online exhibition space for professional artists with over 40,000 registered artists – we have launched this new section of the site dedicated to Art Students from around the world.

The STUART site, which already has profiles of 20,000 art students from around the world, allows each individual to have their own page to display their work. The aim is provide a free forum for you to showcase your art and make connections with other students, dealers, curators and collectors from around the world.

You can also choose your privacy setting on the site allowing your profile to be viewed by everyone or only by your friends or those from your university / college or city. Courses / Poetry Workshop

Suitable For: Literary Devotees or Admirers of Cyril’s poems.

Cyril Wong will talk and discuss the expectations and controversies involved in creating and publishing poetry. There will be writing exercises, elaborations on style and imagery, as well as potential answers to such questions as Why publish? and Why should I care about what anyone thinks about my poetry? Participants will each write a poem in the class.

 Details: 

I have a beautiful empty space in my shophouse screaming out to be filled with some installation art.

I am in the process of converting my ground floor into a private gallery space with a focus on local Singaporian contemporary art where I intend to use half the space for rotating installation art pieces. I can’t offer the sun and the moon but happy to stump up for materials and modest commission as well as the space to showcase your art (admittedly to a small audience as its my private residence, but with regular parties for the like minded & sometimes well connected or well off it’s an opportunity nonetheless).

What: We are repeating this again as many of you couldn’t make it to the previous screening.

Michael Snow is recognized as one of the most important experimental filmmakers, as well as an accomplished visual artist and musician.

*Corpus Callosum, the film (or tape, or projected light work), is constructed of, de-picts, creates, examines, presents, consists of, and is, ‘betweens.’ Between beginning and ending, between ‘natural’ and ‘artificial,’ between fiction and fact, between hearing and seeing, between 1956 and 2002. It’s a tragi-comedy of the cinematic variables. *Corpus Callosum juxtaposes or counterpoints a realism of normal metamorphosis (two extreme examples: pregnancy, explosions) in believable, ‘real’ interior spaces with ‘impossible’ shape changes (some made possible with digital animation).

Entrance fee: Pay what you want (recommended amt: $5).
