Hi dominic,
good to hear some feedback from you.
In this 1st semester, we have 11 weeks of practical lessons, 1 week of field
trip and 1 week of students presentations. The 1st 11 weeks of practical
class concentrates on the understanding of the fundamental element and
principles of art and design.
As you have gone thru, the 1st 45 mins of every class concentrates on the
explaination of the elements and principles of design and then the class
exercises that follows on reiterates on the elements and principles.
Attached is a weekly breakdown of how the weekly exercises relates to the
topics covered, which i will distribute a copy on the 8 Nov for all of u as
a checklist for the assessment.
As you can see, there’s only a total of 4 textiles related exercises. The
aim of bringing in textile related exercises is to allow students to have an
alternative way of exploring 2D. Not all work has got to be done on paper.
Marks, textures, colours, images can also be presented on texiles and
fabrics. The introduction of these textile techniques gives students variety
into working with materials. As you have already known, many works are
presented in paper or digital format and that’s the pretty standard way of
presentation of a design.
Let me share with you that last year’s crowbar best of catergory award
winner has designed a book in fabric with several textile techniques used.
(Are you familar with Crowbar awards? – It’s the most pretigious local
design student competition held once a year and there are different
catergories in 2D & 4D such as vis comm, publications, photography, media,
interactive etc… I can bring in the catalogue to class the following
week) This cross disciplinary approach in design is getting more popular now
and hence it is to students advantage that they do pick up some techniques
during their foundation year.
